Availability of freshwater globally however, is limited. Out of the 2.7 per cent of a total amount of 1 400 million km3 of freshwater, the major portion occurs in the form of permanent snow cover or deep aquifers and only a small fraction is available for use.
India’s population of about 1 billion (2001 census) is expected to stabilize at about 1.6 billion by 2050. This would require some 450 million tones of food grain annually. The basic needs for water of rural and urban populations and cattle, as well as industry and environment and ecological management, also have to be met, taking into account land-use policies, degradation of water resources, depletion of aquifers, etc.
To this end, long-term planning of the utilization of the country’s water resources is required to meet the various competing demands on a sustainable basis.

Our group focus is to combine several research themes to understand the production, evolution and eruption of magma.
Seismic research focuses on the identification and separation of volcanic seismic signals and their attribution to distinct volcanic processes such as magma ascent, pressurisation and magma extrusion.
Petrological and geochemical work allows us to determine the magma history, giving insights into how eruptions occur and magma is generated.
Deformation and InSAR work allow us to remotely monitor eruptions and magma movements within the crust. less

The revised death toll is 1,774, but authorities warned it could increase to about 2,500. Initial reports from the region estimated at least 10,000 perished after the typhoon.
With over 9.5 million people affected by Haiyan, the U.S. and other governments have deployed relief efforts and resources to the Philippines to respond to the devastation.
According to the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, at least 600,000 people have been displaced from their homes after surging waves and forceful winds up to 235 mph wrecked 70 to 80% of structures on Friday. less

In the weeks after a disaster, UNICEF teams provide clean water and sanitation as well as immunizations and supplementary feeding for children at risk of disease and malnutrition.
UNICEF-supported programs also help transform tsunami-affected communities, helping them to build back better. UNICEF-led tsunami reconstruction efforts have greatly improved basic services like health, education and sanitation, but also enhanced security and disaster-preparedness in regions that are vulnerable to natural disasters. less

Survivors of terrorist atrocities committed on British soil and elsewhere will launch a new group to lobby the Government on counter-terror policies and improved support for victims.
The Survivors Against Terror group, which is being founded by survivors and bereaved relatives of victims of Islamist bombings, IRA attacks and far-right extremist murders, has urged others to join.
The group aims to campaign for more effective policies to combat terror and identify gaps in support for victims and the bereaved, as well as help the public tackle hate speech and the terror threat. less

In fact, the blizzard that swept across the Northeast on Jan. 26, 2015, dubbed Winter Storm Juno, was responsible for “creating havoc for more than 60 million people and forcing New York City to shut down on a scale not seen since Superstorm Sandy devastated the region in 2012,” according to Reuters. One of the most publicized aspects of the city’s preparations for Juno was the mass-transit shutdown, after which the economy lost an estimated $200 million.
After the transit system was closed, businesses whose employees and customers rely on public transportation to make it to work were faced with the possibility of revenue loss and decline of workforce productivity. This event serves as an important reminder for businesses to evaluate how they can achieve business continuity when extreme winter weather renders their primary facilities inaccessible.

The kickoff of a special local fund meant to directly benefit the families was announced on Monday.
United Way of Pasco County will oversee the local effort with "100 percent of donated funds" going directly to help victims in their recovery efforts, a July 17 email from Pasco County said. United Way will not take any administrative fees from proceeds collected to help the families, the county said.
As of Monday, county officials said two homes had been destroyed by the sinkhole and five others have been tagged as unsafe for entry and were evacuated. That brings the tally of impacted families up to seven. less

How can you help?
A number of organizations are recruiting volunteers.
The Audubon Society, which is affiliated with the Louisiana Coastal Initiative, is making its Center for Birds of Prey in Florida available for bird cleansing and rehabilitation and is seeking volunteers. Elsewhere, Audubon said it was gearing up to mobilize volunteers and provide assistance as the oil reaches land in Louisiana and elsewhere. Find a local office less
