  • Meteorologists are eyeing the warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures across the tropical Atlantic, including waters in the Gulf of Mexico. These warming temperatures may portend an above-average hurricane season this year. The US could be bracing for more than 8 hurricanes and 17 named storms for the 2020 season.

The Loop Current, the dominant circulation feature in the Gulf of Mexico, arrives through Yucatan Channel and brings warm water into the Gulf. Hurricanes can rapidly intensify as they move over the warm waters of the Loop Current and its associated eddies.
Please join us for the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine webinar on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EDT focused on the interactions between the Loop Current and hurricanes.

The recording will be posted here as soon as it is available.
