  • Meteorologists are eyeing the warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures across the tropical Atlantic, including waters in the Gulf of Mexico. These warming temperatures may portend an above-average hurricane season this year. The US could be bracing for more than 8 hurricanes and 17 named storms for the 2020 season.

    The Loop Current, the dominant circulation feature in the Gulf of Mexico, arrives through Yucatan Channel and brings warm water into the Gulf. Hurricanes can rapidly intensify as they move over the warm waters of the Loop Current and its associated eddies.
