Tazzle (Tadalafil) is primarily known as a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. However, it is also sometimes used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PAH is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart. It can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, and fainting.
Tadalafil, the active ingredient in Tazzle, belongs to a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. These drugs work by relaxing the smooth muscles in the walls of blood vessels, which leads to vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels) and increased blood flow.
In the case of PAH, vasodilation can help reduce the workload on the heart by decreasing the resistance in the pulmonary arteries, thereby improving exercise capacity and symptoms associated with PAH. While other medications specifically approved for PAH are more commonly used as first-line treatments, tadalafil may be prescribed in certain cases, either alone or in combination with other PAH medications, based on the individual patient's needs and response to treatment.
