The sword was discovered in 965 in an ancient tomb in Hubei, China. Despite being soaked in underground water for over ,000 years, the sword was found in an almost pristine condition. The scabbard, finished in black lacquer, provided an almost airtight fit around the sword, contributing to its remarkable preservation.
The Sword of Goujian is renowned for its sharpness. The blade, made primarily of copper, has edges with a higher tin content, making them harder and able to keep a sharper edge. Both sides of the blade are decorated with a repeating rhombi pattern, their dark lines standing out from the sword’s overall golden hue.
The sword’s hilt is inlaid with blue crystals and turquoise. On one side of the blade, eight characters are engraved in what is known as bird-worm seal script.
