Cyclone Tauktae was a powerful, deadly, and destructive tropical cyclone in the Arabian Sea that became the most powerful tropical cyclone to make landfall in the Indian state of Gujarat since the 1998 Gujarat cyclone and one of the most powerful tropical cyclones to ever affect India's west coast. The US Joint Typhoon Warning Center reported maximum sustained winds of 100 knots (185 kilometers per hour) and gusts up to 125 knots (230 kilometers per hour) as Tauktae approached land, which is equivalent to a category 3 or 4 hurricanes. It was the fifth-most powerful storm to hit the Arabian Sea since 1998. Tauktae brought heavy rains and flash floods to parts of Kerala and Lakshadweep. Heavy rain was also reported in the states of Goa, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. This cyclone killed at least 169 people and left another 81 people missing in India. There were also five reported deaths in Pakistan. In Gujarat, the storm displaced over 200,000 people. The cyclone also caused damage to India's western coast's infrastructure and agricultural sectors. The storm had an impact on Mumbai as well, with airports closing for safety reasons.
As the cyclone approached, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds, about 2,00,000 people were evacuated across several states. The storm has hit the region in the midst of a devastating second wave of COVID-19. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Army have been dispatched to severely damaged areas in Gujarat and Diu. Houses were destroyed, and power was out in several districts in these states. Cyclone Tauktae impacted more than half of India, wreaking havoc on all states along India's west coast. According to officials, the popular Kesar variety of mangoes was damaged by strong winds in Gir, Somnath, and Junagadh districts, where they are primarily grown. More than 40 fishermen were lost in the sea when their boat was caught in a cyclone. This indicates that global warming and rising ocean temperatures are among the reasons for the change.
